Set in Central Otago in the middle of the Southern Alps, Wanaka is a lake-side resort town that offers amenities. Situated between Lake Wanaka and the Clutha River, Wanaka is an ideal spot for property investment. Once a booming gold-mining town, Wanaka has a reputation as being the quieter, more relaxed sibling of the sometimes frantic Queenstown.
Though small-scale, Wanaka is home to a variety of restaurants, cafes and bars to suit any lifestyle. Other entertainment options include a bohemian cinema in the form of Paradiso Cinema, with its unique seating opportunities; Puzzle World, perplexing to the senses and fun for all ages; and the New Zealand Fighter Pilots Museum, home to a large collection of vintage WWII aircraft. For wine-lovers, there also a number of excellent vineyards and wineries in the area.
Wanaka’s excitement is not limited to summer. Annual festivals include Warbirds over Wanaka, a fantastic air show every other Easter; Wanakafest, and NZ Freeski Open. Summer or winter, there are also limitless chances to enjoy Wanaka’s beautiful outdoor setting. In summertime, it’s possible to mountain bike, hike, mountaineer or climb in Mt. Aspiring Park or in other nearby hills. The more adventurous can sky dive or paraglide, in addition to the usual lakeside activities of fishing, jet-boating and watersports. Wanaka is also an ideal starting point for attempts to scale Mount Aspiring.
In winter-time, Wanaka plays host to nearby Treble Cone, Cardrona, SnowPark and Snow Farm ski fields. High ski season ranges from July to September, but can extend to later in the year, depending on snow base. Each ski field caters to both beginners and advanced skiers, families and singles.
